[4ii] The Aryans and the Vedic Civilization

Human beings were on the move for millennia hunting, gathering and searching for more comfortable environments to survive. They moved and lived in groups or clans.  The world ‘gotra’ which also came to mean ‘clan’ <<was the Vedic word for both “mountain” and “large forest”>>

<<Human civilization is created in, and moves along, river valleys. Like a river, human civilization also has three stages – hill stage, plain stage and delta stage. From the hill stage, it moves to the plain stage and from the plain stage to the delta stage. A civilization starts in the hill stage, develops in the plain stage, and matures in the delta stage.>>

<<The Aryans who are known today as Caucasians originated from Switzerland. To escape from the snow in Switzerland, they turned eastward to the Caucus region to seek refuge in the first lap of their journey.>>

This must have been between 35, 000 to 20, 000 years ago when the Aryans who originated from the Germanic lands, the Alpine mountains and the table lands of the Alps where three major rivers originate the ‘Rhone’,  the ‘Rhein’ and the ‘Donau’ moved to the areas around the Caucasian mountains in Central Asia. This was the southern region of greater Russia – what is today Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan, which used to be called Shákadviipa in Sam’skrta or Sacdonia in Greek.  Here in the Caucasus some enlightened Aryan rs’is or sages started to compose the oldest portion of the Vedas, called the Rg Veda in the Vedic language about 15,000 years ago.

Eventually the Aryans moved to present day Iran and later, between 10,000 and 7, 000 years ago they entered India via Afghanistan.

The Aryans were people of cold countries and when they entered Iran they discovered abundance of food and good climate which they liked very much. <<So when the Aryans found that Persia offered them various delights, they named it aryánaḿ vraja, that is, ‘the bountiful land of the Aryans.’ From this the county was called Iranbej, and the present name is Iran. The Arabic name of the country is Pharas, from which the word Persia has come. >>

During this Neolithic period the cattle-rearing Aryans learned wheat and other crops cultivation from the natives of Iran. Still, their staple was generally barley which they had cultivated in the Caucasus.

<<The English word ‘Aryan’ comes from German and originally from the Vedic word árya. As far as it can be determined, the word árya comes from the Vedic verbal root r which means ‘to cultivate’ or ‘to plough’, so the meaning of the word árya becomes ‘that person or community whose culture thrives through cultivation.’>>

<<Once agriculture started, people learnt how to grow straw, and they began to build straw houses on the ground. After human beings learnt the science of elementary construction, they were able to travel and settle wherever they chose, and they achieved a measure of stability and security in social life. This development led human beings to contemplate something higher than the physical or psychic spheres, and they began to think about spirituality. … So, we can say that human civilization started about 15,000 years ago, and that the Vedic civilization is the oldest civilization in the world.>>
